Interesting news just out, BSKYB this morning, has lost it’s court appeal bid to block a forced 10.4% sale of the broadcasters 17.9% stake in ITV. BSKYB acquired it’s 17.9% stake in ITV in November 2006, a move which thwarted a takeover attempt by Virgin Media (ntl:Telewest – as it was known at the time).]]>

Virgin Media reported last week that it saw a year-on-year increase in operating cash flow as it beat analysts forecasts for the third quarter, analysts had predicted OCF to be at £337m when it was actually £348m. In the third quarter, average revenue per user rose to a record 44.24 pounds from 42 pounds a year earlier. The Cable Co, sees its Broadband customer numbers increase by 39,000, VM now has 3.77 million Broadband customers. Meanwhile, 37,000 new customers joined its TV service, taking total TV customer numbers to 3.71 million.]]>

Cable has highest average speed according to Ofcom. Virgin’s 10 meg product had an average speed of nearly twice that offered by 8 Meg ADSL ISPs. VM’s 20 meg product was fastest overall.]]>

Virgin Media have contacted us as they want to invite Cable Forum users to participate in a Broadband Quality Trial which has just started this month. The purpose of the tests are that over the next year, Virgin Media want to be measuring the performance of their broadband, from things like how fast a customers average download speeds are to how reliable their network is.]]>

Hot news out from Virgin Media today indicates that Virgin Media is preparing for a next generation Broadband revolution. They have spent the last 18 months conducting significant upgrades using the latest DOCSIS 3.0 technology. Virgin Media say to celebrate the completion of the network roll-out, they have announced a new pricing structure for its 50Mb service. From 1st September Virgin Media will reduce the monthly cost of its 50Mb service for new and existing customers to £28, when taken with a phone line, or £38 if taken as a sole product.]]>

Virgin Media said today that it is to launch four new High Definition (HD) channels. LIVING will be broadcast in HD, joined by HD channels from FX, MTV Networks International and National Geographic. All four channels will be available to Virgin Media’s 3.6 million TV customers. Virgin Media have stated that the first channel due to launch, will be towards the end of July. ]]>

Just a brief update but according to a recent news item in the Daily Telegraph, a filing was made last Friday with the SEC. The Virgin Boss, Sir Richard Branson has cut his stake in the cable group to 6.5% from 10.45%, a move which now sees him change from second to fourth place in the shareholder register. The largest shareholder in Virgin Media is now Fidelity, with a 13.37% stake. Franklin Mutual Advisors comes second with a stake nearing 10%. Wellington Management Company has a 8.58% stake.]]>
